Hollow City

A modern take on Fantasy & Science Fiction

About

Hollow City is a term meant to illustrate the almost hollow nature
of many of America’s once grand cities.

Take Detroit: Once a center of art, culture, and industry, Detroit has slowly deteriorated into a place full of vacant buildings, crumbling exteriors, crime, and more. Housing prices have dropped. Corporations refuse to go there. Individuals find it difficult to do anything to turn around what had been a very elegant city. Even some of the Hallmarks of the past, Detroit’s own Grand Central Station, are being torn down and destroyed just to remove empty – and dangerous – spaces.

Like Detroit and other urban centers around the country and throughout the world, Hollow City feels there is a void that is growing within the science fiction and fantasy genres. Even though there are still places to go to find new, original, and well-written fiction, those bastions of the old order are disappearing. What is left behind? Speculative fiction that no longer really speculates on the past, present, or future and experiments with assumptions we should be making. There really is no exploration of story within the realms of human experience that speaks to this generation or that will inspire the next.

We at Hollow City :: Science Fiction and Fantasy want to change that and encourage a re-habitation of themes and topics that were popular in the past and are still relevant today. We want to encourage you, the writer, you, the reader, you, the artist, filmmaker, and poet to come to our site, find something that makes you want to write and then write. We want you to publish that. Most importantly, we want you to work with us in building a community of writers and readers that will herald in a new generation of fiction just as Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Eugene Zamiatin, Aldous Huxley, Ayn Rand, Frank Herbert, and many, many others have done in the past.

The core mission of Hollow City :: Science Fiction and Fantasy is to encourage our visitors, readers, writers, editorial board, and the passive guest to want to speak up, speak out, write something, and push the envelope of what science fiction and fantasy can be and should’ve always remained.

We want to attract international writers who bring their unique cultural approach to the genres. Not an Americanized version, but a uniquely cultural vision to these genres. We want to attract the up-and-coming in art and illustration to create new visions and new directions. We want to make this community the preeminent science fiction and fantasy location on the internet … with your help.
